MELGHAT TIGER RESERVE- THE MEETING OF THE GHATS

This tiger reserve is located in southern off -shoot of the satpuda range in central india, also called t5he gavilgarh hills. The high ridge running east-west forms the south-western boundry of the tiger reserve. This reserve is the prime habitat of the tiger.

The forest is dry deciduous in nature, dominated by teak trees. The area is also the catchment of five major river of the region viz. Khandu, khapra, sipna, gadga and dolar, all are the tribitaries to tapti. Melghat is the prime bio-diversity repository of the state of maharashtra. It has arugged topography with very few entry points. The makhala, chikaldara, chiladari, pataulda and gugamal are the large plateaus midst this rugged terrain. Continuity of forest of satpuda range guarantees long term conservation of this area. Nature itself plays sentinel here.
